Icons

Le développement de l'enregistrement de musique afro-américaine, destiné aux noires américains, fait son apparition dans les années 20.

Il est intéressant de relever le processus par lequel une musique émanant d'un groupe ethnique particulier est arrivé, à une période déterminée, à influencer la musique populaire de l'époque et à utiliser la technologie du disque.

Au moment où les noires américains du Sud entreprirent, vers 1917, leur immigration vers les villes industrielles du Nord, leur musique avait tendance à devenir plus profane et à s'individualiser, puis à se commercialiser, tout en gardant les bases africaines de leur culture noire.

C'est le 26 février 1917 que la Maison VICTOR TALKING MACHINE COMPANY enregistra le premier disque de Jazz dans ses studios de New-York City, représenté par l'orchestre blanc "THE ORIGINAL DIXIELAND JASS (JAZZ) BAND" qui interprétèrent les deux morceaux "Dixieland Jass Band One-Step" (fiche 2'322) et "Livery Stable Blues" (fiche 2'321)

Cette nouvelle musique afro-américaine eut un énorme succès, raison pour laquelle il était important d'en garder la mémoire, d'où la collection de plus de 34'400 titres rassemblée ici, sous forme de disques 78 t. et autres supports.

LOUIS ARMSTRONG N'ETAIT PAS NE LE 4 JUILLET 1900 MAIS LE 4 AOUT 1901. La Nouvelle-Orléans avait coutume de célébrer le 4 juillet,soit le jour de la fête de l'Indépendance nationale,l'anniversaire de SATCHMO,décédé en 1975. En réalité,ARMSTRONG n'était pas né le 4 juillet 1900 comme il l'avait toujours affirmé. L'Historien TAD JONES a, en effet, découvert son certificat de baptême à l'Eglise du Sacré-Coeur de Jésus à la Nouvelle-Orléans, indiquant qu'il avait reçu son Baptême le 25 août 1901, trois semaines après sa naissance. Il a ensuite pu comparer cette découverte avec d'autres indications certifiant la véracité de la date. Les spécialistes en histoire de la musique n'avaient jamais été vraiment convaincus de la date avancée par LOUIS. Il provenait d'un milieu pauvre et illettré où ces dates étaient souvent ignorées.
